Description

The Tramex Concrete Moisture Probe, also known as The Determinator, measures the in-situ moisture content within a concrete floor or slab. It is used with a concrete moisture meter from the Tramex Concrete Moisture Encounter range, the CME5 and CMEX5, as well as the previous CME4 and CMEX2 models. It extends the capabilities of the Tramex concrete moisture meter range.

The Concrete Moisture Probe provides in-situ moisture content readings in the Tramex Unified Concrete Moisture Test Method: quantitative moisture content measurements are taken in both the top 3/4 inch layer and within the body of concrete floors and slabs, down to an extendable depth of up to 4 inches (100mm), using a 3/4 inch (19mm) diameter probe.

The Determinator helps determine whether moisture within the concrete slab is originating from below, within or above the slab. This information can be essential in establishing the next step in fixing moisture problems in a concrete slab. Note that the Concrete Moisture Probe can only be used with a Tramex concrete moisture meter; it does not work alone.

The Determinator is also available as part of the Concrete Determinator Kit (CDK), the Concrete Determinator Tech Kit (CDTK, including the CMEX5) and the Concrete Determinator Inspector Kit (CDIK, including the CMEX5, the reusable Concrete Moisture Probe, a plug-in Hygro-i2 RH probe for in-situ testing per ASTM F2170, an infrared surface thermometer and an extension handle).

Features

  • Instant and accurate
  • Designed to work in the same drill hole made for the ASTM F2170 test
  • Eliminates confusion between in-situ relative humidity tests and surface moisture content tests
  • Determines whether moisture is coming from below or above the concrete slab surface
  • Helps determine the type and extent of mitigation if needed
  • Reusable, extendable, and requires no plastic hole liners
  • Can be used in conjunction with the Tramex Concrete Moisture Encounters CME5 and CMEX5 (and the earlier CME4 and CMEX2)

How It Works

The Concrete Moisture Probe, used with Tramex Concrete Moisture Encounter instruments, operates on the principle that the electrical impedance of a material varies with its moisture content. The CME instrument is pressed onto the CMP cradle, which is pressed onto the material surface with the pins fully compressed and the probe inserted into the pre-drilled 3/4 inch (19mm) hole. The electrical impedance is measured by creating a low frequency alternating electric field between the electrodes and the probe, to a depth of up to 4 inches (10cm). The very small alternating current flowing through the field is inversely proportional to the impedance of the material, and the instrument derives the moisture value from this current.

Operating procedure: the Determinator cradle should sit flat on the slab surface with the Tramex concrete moisture meter placed and firmly pressed onto the cradle, pins fully compressed. The probe reads from the bottom, within the body of the slab, up to the surface.

Applications & Suitable Materials

  • In-situ quantitative moisture content testing within the body of concrete floors and slabs
  • Diagnosing the source of moisture in a slab (from below, within or above)
  • Unified moisture content testing combined with surface readings from a Tramex concrete moisture meter
  • Concrete moisture mitigation assessment before flooring or coating installation
