Description
The Tramex Moisture Encounter ME5 is a pinless, non-destructive moisture meter for wood, drywall and other building materials. It is the new and improved version of the well-established Moisture Encounter Plus (MEP), which has been trusted by moisture professionals for many years.
As a wood moisture meter, the ME5 provides actual moisture content percentage readings without the need for pins that damage the surface. It also functions as a moisture meter for drywall, plaster, roofing, tile and masonry, helping determine moisture content levels in walls, ceilings and floors.
The Dual Depth feature makes it possible to determine where the moisture is located within the material. Shallow-depth readings of up to 3/8 inch (9mm) and deep-depth readings of up to 1 1/4 inch (30mm) can be compared to distinguish surface moisture from core moisture and to eliminate the influence of the substrate when testing coverings.
The ME5 is pre-calibrated to the various densities of common building materials and detects moisture through paint, wallpaper, drywall, ceramic tiles, floor coverings, wood, ceiling tiles, roofing membranes and asphalt composition shingles. Moisture readings can be visualised with the Tramex Meters App and turned into moisture maps, reports and charts for sharing. Bluetooth connectivity to mobile devices also allows GeoTagging of test results and the creation and sharing of photos.
Features
- 5 ranges of sensitivity: Wood and Timber / Shallow Depth / Drywall and Roofing / Plaster and Tile / Masonry
- Dual-Depth penetration allows comparison of surface and core moisture and elimination of substrate influence when testing coverings
- Deep signal penetration, up to 1 1/4 inch (30mm) in wood and drywall, detects elevated moisture through most covering materials without damaging or puncturing the material under test
- Shallow Depth scale with a field penetration of up to 3/8 inch (9mm)
- Wide range of readings from 5% to 30% on the Wood scale and 0 to 100 on the comparative scale for all other materials
- Detects moisture through paint, wallpaper, drywall, ceramic tiles, floor coverings, wood, ceiling tiles, roofing membranes and asphalt composition shingles
- Bluetooth connection to the accompanying iOS and Android app for moisture mapping, reporting and GeoTagging
- Hold function to freeze the reading, useful where the meter face may not be visible
- High moisture audio warning tone which can be enabled or disabled
- Large, clear, easy to read analog display
- Rugged, ergonomically designed enclosure
How It Works
The ME5 detects and evaluates moisture conditions within building materials by non-destructively measuring electrical impedance. A low frequency electronic signal is transmitted into the material via the electrodes in the base of the instrument. The strength of this signal varies in proportion to the amount of moisture in the material under test. The ME5 determines the strength of the current and converts this to a moisture content value on a large clear analog dial.
Applications and Suitable Materials
- Locating moisture-related problems within and behind a variety of building materials in the building envelope
- Mapping the extent of moisture damage caused to buildings
- Monitoring progressive drying conditions of building materials and surfaces
- Comparing surface and core moisture to eliminate substrate influence when testing coverings
- Suitable materials: wood and timber, drywall, plaster, roofing, tile, masonry, floor coverings, ceiling tiles, roofing membranes, asphalt composition shingles
